When can art galleries re-open?
Non-profit art galleries and museums were allowed to re-open as of June 29, 2020, assuming the facility can maintain physical distancing requirements and meet the guidelines for operation contained in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
Commercial galleries were allowed to re-open with retail businesses on May 19, 2020, also subject to the guidelines for retail in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
When can theatres re-open?
Theatres were allowed to re-open as of June 29, 2020, assuming the theatre can maintain physical distancing requirements and meet the guidelines for operation contained in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
What about children’s programming, like day camps, that we are planning this summer?
Children’s programming was permitted as of June 22, 2020, even in facilities that were not yet permitted to open for their other activities. Programming is permitted only assuming the company can maintain physical distancing requirements and meet the guidelines for operation contained in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan. Please note that the plan includes specific guidelines for child and youth day camp programs.
What are physical distancing requirements?
Generally, use of your facility must be planned to allow for two metres (six-and-a half feet) between people from different households. This guidance pertains to all spaces that are open to the general public, including lobbies, concession stands, washrooms and other public spaces.
You will find specific recommendations around physical distancing in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
Is there a maximum audience size for theatres?
With the guidelines for re-opening as of June 29, 2020, the maximum number of people permitted in a theatre is 30% of capacity to a maximum of 150 people, assuming that physical distancing can be maintained. During the consultation on July 9, 2020 with Richelle Bourgoin, Executive Director at the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, it was stated that maximum number of people did not include performers and crew.
There are specific recommendations for physical distancing in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
Are there special requirements for performing arts?
The Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan includes an entire section devoted to performing arts, which were allowed to resume operation on July 6, 2020. In addition to a section of general information, there are specific requirements for provided for choirs/vocal groups, orchestras/bands, theatre (including musical theatre), and dance.
Are bands or other musicians allowed to perform in restaurants and bars?
Bands and musicians have been permitted to perform in restaurants and bars, provided that physical distancing can be maintained both between all of the performers and between the performers and the audience. The physical distance between the performers and the audience is recommended at 4 meters, particularly with singers involved, since “turbulent airflow” activities have been known to cause the spread of COVID-19; singing is still considered a high-risk activity. Additionally, items like microphones that are likely to be exposed to respiratory droplets must not be shared.
Dancing is still not permitted for restaurant and bar patrons.
It’s best to review all of the regulations related to the performing arts in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
What about choirs?
Choir performances are not permitted.
While rehearsing is not prohibited, it is not encouraged. If a rehearsal is to proceed, all participants must face forward, be at least 2 meters apart, and wear masks that cover their mouth and nose. The conductor must be at least 4 meters from the choir.
What about wind instruments?
Wind instruments are permitted within the other restrictions for performing arts, but physical distancing must be measured from the end of the instrument.
What restrictions apply to dance?
Dance classes and performances should consider the restrictions and recommendations in both the Performing Arts and the Fitness Facilities sections of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.
Is there special guidance for cleaning and for staff?
The sections for both art galleries and theatres of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan contain recommendations related to general operations, cleaning and sanitation, and staff practices. You should review them carefully and frequently, as the information may change as our situation develops. You can get to these sections quickly by using the Table of Contents at the beginning of the plan; it allows you to click directly to the section in which you’re interested.
