Please join us as we welcome Heather Benning, who will join SK Arts after Labour Day as Program Consultant.

Heather is a practicing artist whose work, rooted in the landscape of the Canadian prairies, has shown widely across North America and Europe, most recently at Architekturzentrum Wien (Vienna, Austria), and as part of the Western Canadian Biennale, 2020 Borderlines, at the Remai Modern. Her two award-winning short films, The Dollhouse and Winter Sleep, were official selections at numerous North American and European film festivals. Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Benning is currently collaborating with her sister, writer Sheri Benning, on a new body of work.

In addition, Benning has worked as an educator and curator. In 2019 and 2020, she was an artist mentor with CARFAC Saskatchewan. This role saw her travel throughout the province to engage with rural artists, offering constructive critique and advice. Working with CARFAC afforded Benning an in-depth awareness of Saskatchewan’s diverse artistic communities and their respective needs.
Most recently, Benning was the Director of the Art Gallery of Swift Current. During her tenure, she oversaw a significant overhaul of the Gallery in terms of its physical space and its governance and organizational structure and also expanded their programming and engagement with the local communities.

Benning says “SK Arts has played an integral role in my development as an artist. Without the assistance of the SK Arts, many of my projects would have been much more difficult to realize.
And the support of Program Consultants, like Carol Greyeyes and Noreen Neu, when I was an emerging artist further played a significant role in my artistic development. I'm excited to take on this new role and look forward to working for an organization that supports provincial arts organizations and artists.”
